Year V: Week 23 of Ordinary Time

Friday: Afternoon Prayer

ABOUT TODAY

In the church calendar the long stretch of time between Pentecost and the beginning of Advent is known as ‘Ordinary Time.’ Inasmuch as we have celebrated the birth, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus and the subsequent descent of the Holy Spirit; so this time is often seen as representative of the long ‘Church Age’ when the gospel is preached to all creation.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Reader:
God, come to my assistance.
All:
Lord, make haste to help me.

Reader:
All glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
All:
As it has been from the beginning, is today and forever! Amen

AFTERNOON PSALM

Psalm 119:121-128

Ayin

Don’t leave me to the mercy of my enemies,
    for I have done what is just and right.
Please guarantee a blessing for me.
    Don’t let the arrogant oppress me!
My eyes strain to see your rescue,
    to see the truth of your promise fulfilled.
I am your servant; deal with me in unfailing love,
    and teach me your decrees.
Give discernment to me, your servant;
    then I will understand your laws.
Lord, it is time for you to act,
    for these evil people have violated your instructions.
Truly, I love your commands
    more than gold, even the finest gold.
Each of your commandments is right.
    That is why I hate every false way.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

WORSHIP
(Optional)

All:
(A short time of worship and thanksgiving, led or spontaneous.  Alternatively a devotional song may be played and listened to.)

OLD TESTAMENT READING

Deuteronomy 27:1-26

The Law Written on Stones

Then Moses, along with the elders of Israel, commanded the people, saying, “Keep all the commands I have given you today. Soon you will cross the Jordan River to go into the land the Lord your God is giving you. On that day set up some large stones and cover them with plaster. When you cross over, write all the words of these teachings on them. Then you may enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, a fertile land, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised. After you have crossed the Jordan River, set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I command you today, and cover them with plaster. Build an altar of stones there to the Lord your God, but don’t use any iron tool to cut the stones; build the altar of the Lord your God with stones from the field. Offer burnt offerings on it to the Lord your God, and offer fellowship offerings there, and eat them and rejoice before the Lord your God. Then write clearly all the words of these teachings on the stones.”

Curses of the Law

Then Moses and the Levites who were priests spoke to all Israel and said, “Be quiet, Israel. Listen! Today you have become the people of the Lord your God. Obey the Lord your God, and keep his commands and laws that I give you today.”

That day Moses also gave the people this command:

When you cross the Jordan River, these tribes must stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin. And these tribes must stand on Mount Ebal to announce the curses: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.

The Levites will say to all the people of Israel in a loud voice:

“Anyone will be cursed who makes an idol or statue and secretly sets it up, because the Lord hates the idols people make.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

“Anyone will be cursed who dishonours his father or mother.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

“Anyone will be cursed who moves the stone that marks a neighbour’s border.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

“Anyone will be cursed who sends a blind person down the wrong road.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

“Anyone will be cursed who is unfair to foreigners, orphans, or widows.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

“A man will be cursed who has sexual relations with his father’s wife, because it is a dishonour to his father.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

“Anyone will be cursed who has sexual relations with an animal.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

“A man will be cursed who has sexual relations with his sister, whether she is his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

“A man will be cursed who has sexual relations with his mother-in-law.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

“Anyone will be cursed who kills a neighbour secretly.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

“Anyone will be cursed who takes money to murder an innocent person.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

“Anyone will be cursed who does not agree with the words of these teachings and does not obey them.”

Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

Reader:
The Word of the Lord.
All:
Thanks be to God.

Pause for Reflection……

PRAYER

(Take a moment to bring to God any issues that have arisen during the morning.  You may like to end with the following prayer…)

Reader:
Mighty God, as we come to the end of our week,
Grant your blessings over all we love and your increase upon all we do,
We ask this in Jesus name.  Amen

GRACE (Optional)

Reader:

Lord God, we thank you for your gift to us of this food;
Produce of earth, sky, many living beings, and much hard work.

May we eat with prayerfulness, gratitude and moderation;
With renewed minds and spirit-controlled appetites.

May we eat with compassion for those who hunger today,
And in such a way that reduces the suffering of all creatures;
Healing and preserving our precious planet.

Use this food to strengthen our bodies, revive our spirits,
Nurture our family and nourish our resolve;
That we may continue to serve all that lives with all our life. Amen
