Year V: Week 4 of Easter

Sunday: Morning Prayer

ABOUT TODAY

Feast: St. Philip & St James the Less, Apostles: Philip was the brother of Andrew and Peter and an early disciple of John the Baptist. In John 1:43-45, after being directed by John the Baptist to Jesus, he brought Andrew to the Lord. According to tradition he preached in Greece and was crucified upside down at Hierapolis under Emperor Domitian. Very little is known about James the Less, the son of Mary and Alphaeus (who was the brother of Joseph). He is not to be confused with James the son of Zebedee (the brother of the Apostle John) or with James the Greater, the brother of Jesus.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Reader:
Lord, Open my lips.
All:
And my mouth will give you praise.

Reader:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
All:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

INVITATORY PSALM:

Psalm 100 (Jubilate Deo)

All:

A Song of Praise for the Lord’s Faithfulness to His People
A Psalm of Thanksgiving.

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
Know that the Lord, He is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

MORNING PSALM

Psalm 87

A song. A psalm of the descendants of Korah.

On the holy mountain
    stands the city founded by the Lord.
He loves the city of Jerusalem
    more than any other city in Israel.
O city of God,
    what glorious things are said of you! Interlude

I will count Egypt and Babylon among those who know me—
    also Philistia and Tyre, and even distant Ethiopia.
    They have all become citizens of Jerusalem!
Regarding Jerusalem it will be said,
    “Everyone enjoys the rights of citizenship there.”
    And the Most High will personally bless this city.
When the Lord registers the nations, he will say,
    “They have all become citizens of Jerusalem.” Interlude

The people will play flutes and sing,
    “The source of my life springs from Jerusalem!”

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

THE LORD’S
PRAYER

Reader:
And so we pray…

All:
Our Father in heaven,
Holy is Your Name.
Your Kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen.

GOSPEL READING

Mark 3:20-35

Some People Say Jesus Has a Devil

Then Jesus went home, but again a crowd gathered. There were so many people that Jesus and his followers could not eat. When his family heard this, they went to get him because they thought he was out of his mind. But the teachers of the law from Jerusalem were saying, “Beelzebul is living inside him! He uses power from the ruler of demons to force demons out of people.”

So Jesus called the people together and taught them with stories. He said, “Satan will not force himself out of people. A kingdom that is divided cannot continue, and a family that is divided cannot continue. And if Satan is against himself and fights against his own people, he cannot continue; that is the end of Satan. No one can enter a strong person’s house and steal his things unless he first ties up the strong person. Then he can steal things from the house. I tell you the truth, all sins that people do and all the things people say against God can be forgiven. But anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of a sin that continues forever.”

Jesus said this because the teachers of the law said that he had an evil spirit inside him.

Jesus’ True Family

Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to tell him to come out. Many people were sitting around Jesus, and they said to him, “Your mother and brothers are waiting for you outside.”

Jesus asked, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” Then he looked at those sitting around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! My true brother and sister and mother are those who do what God wants.”

Reader:
The Word of the Lord.
All:
Thanks be to God.

THE APOSTLES CREED

Reader:
And so we make our declaration of faith…

All:
We believe in God the Father, Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into the grave;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit;
The Holy Worldwide Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting. Amen.

COLLECT

Reader:
(Either this or an alternative closing prayer may be said.)

God of Life, who for our redemption,
Gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross,
And by his glorious resurrection,
Has delivered us from the power of our enemy:
Grant us so to die daily to sin,
That we may evermore live with him in the joy of his risen life;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

BLESSING

Reader:
(When praying in community, this or a similar blessing may be used)

And may God the Holy Spirit,
Whom the risen Lord breathed into his disciples,
Empower you and fill you with Christ’s peace. Amen
