Year V: Holy Week

Palm Sunday: Morning Prayer

ABOUT TODAY

FEAST: Palm Sunday: Today marks the beginning of Holy Week; the final week of Lent leading up to Easter Sunday. During this time we focus on the last few days of Jesus’ earthly ministry and the events leading up to and including his death. Palm Sunday is a joyful remembrance of his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where he is acclaimed as Messiah by the multitude and recognised as the rightful king of Israel. The name ‘Palm Sunday’ refers to the Jewish tradition of welcoming a victorious king by waving palm leaves and laying them down in front of the procession.

CALL TO WORSHIP

INVITATORY PSALM:

Psalm 100 (Jubilate Deo)

A Song of Praise for the Lord’s Faithfulness to His People
A Psalm of Thanksgiving.

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.

It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

MORNING PSALM

Psalm 118

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
    His faithful love endures forever.

Let all Israel repeat:
    “His faithful love endures forever.”
Let Aaron’s descendants, the priests, repeat:
    “His faithful love endures forever.”
Let all who fear the Lord repeat:
    “His faithful love endures forever.”

In my distress I prayed to the Lord,
    and the Lord answered me and set me free.
The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear.
    What can mere people do to me?
Yes, the Lord is for me; he will help me.
    I will look in triumph at those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in people.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in princes.

Though hostile nations surrounded me,
    I destroyed them all with the authority of the Lord.
Yes, they surrounded and attacked me,
    but I destroyed them all with the authority of the Lord.
They swarmed around me like bees;
    they blazed against me like a crackling fire.
    But I destroyed them all with the authority of the Lord.
My enemies did their best to kill me,
    but the Lord rescued me.
The Lord is my strength and my song;
    he has given me victory.
Songs of joy and victory are sung in the camp of the godly.
    The strong right arm of the Lord has done glorious things!
The strong right arm of the Lord is raised in triumph.
    The strong right arm of the Lord has done glorious things!
I will not die; instead, I will live
    to tell what the Lord has done.
The Lord has punished me severely,
    but he did not let me die.

Open for me the gates where the righteous enter,
    and I will go in and thank the Lord.
These gates lead to the presence of the Lord,
    and the godly enter there.
I thank you for answering my prayer
    and giving me victory!

The stone that the builders rejected
    has now become the cornerstone.
This is the Lord’s doing,
    and it is wonderful to see.
This is the day the Lord has made.
    We will rejoice and be glad in it.
Please, Lord, please save us.
    Please, Lord, please give us success.
Bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
    We bless you from the house of the Lord.
The Lord is God, shining upon us.
    Take the sacrifice and bind it with cords on the altar.
You are my God, and I will praise you!
    You are my God, and I will exalt you!

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
    His faithful love endures forever.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

PRAYER & INTERCESSION

Let us pray for the day and its tasks, for the church and her life, and for the world and its needs.

(You may use these prayers as written or use them as ‘prayer pointers’ for your own spontaneous petitions.

Personal Requests

  • Almighty God, we hail you as our King and Messiah! Lifting our hearts to you, we rejoice that you have made your dwelling place amongst us and expectantly await your second coming and the restoration of all things.
             – Hosannah in the highest…
  • Come and take your place as the Lord of our lives and as the only rightful ruler of our souls.
             – Hosannah in the highest…
  • Fling wide the gates, and let the King come in! May the throne of our lives be the seat of your power.
             – Hosannah in the highest…

Family & Friends

  • Lord Jesus, may your presence go with us and your power overshadow us. May we find courage to acclaim you as Saviour and boldness to declare you to the world. May our voices be ever lifted to proclaim…
             – Hosannah in the highest…
  • Give us a strong witness to our friends and family. Restore those who wander and renew those who fall.
             – Hosannah in the highest…
  • When the people acclaimed you, you loved them. When they rejected you, you loved them still. May we follow in your footsteps.
             – Hosannah in the highest…

The Church

  • Lord Jesus, when your church is celebrated and when she is persecuted, may she always bring the fragrant aroma of Christ to the world. May she know humility in honour, long-suffering in trial and joy in pain
             – Hosannah in the highest…
  • We raise our hands in prayer for the church militant upon earth and give thanks for the church triumphant in heaven.
             – Hosannah in the highest…
  • We raise our voice in praise for the entrance of our King, and raise our hearts in prayer for the full manifestation of your Kingdom.
             – Hosannah in the highest…

The World

  • Lord Jesus, even as your church has purified herself in repentance and prepared herself through Lent; now lead her to Calvary to witness the lamb upon the cross, that she might testify boldly to the lamb upon the throne. May the world hear in our voices the wondrous deeds of God and see in our actions the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
             – Hosannah in the highest…
  • Have mercy upon those who will laud you in your triumph but deny you in your passion.
             – Hosannah in the highest…
  • Come quickly, Lord Jesus! May your will be done and your Kingdom come!
             – Hosannah in the highest…
  • The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases and your mercies never come to an end! We ask you Jesus, in your mercy, to heal those who are sick with the Coronavirus today!
             – Hosannah in the highest…

THE LORD’S
PRAYER

Reader:
And so we pray…

All:
Our Father in heaven,
Holy is Your Name.
Your Kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen.

GOSPEL READING

Luke 19:28-40

Jesus Enters Jerusalem as a King

After Jesus said this, he went on toward Jerusalem. As Jesus came near Bethphage and Bethany, towns near the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent out two of his followers. He said, “Go to the town you can see there. When you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here to me. If anyone asks you why you are untying it, say that the Master needs it.”

The two followers went into town and found the colt just as Jesus had told them. As they were untying it, its owners came out and asked the followers, “Why are you untying our colt?”

The followers answered, “The Master needs it.” So they brought it to Jesus, threw their coats on the colt’s back, and put Jesus on it. As Jesus rode toward Jerusalem, others spread their coats on the road before him.

As he was coming close to Jerusalem, on the way down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of followers began joyfully shouting praise to God for all the miracles they had seen. They said,

“God bless the king who comes in the name of the Lord!
There is peace in heaven and glory to God!”

Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell your followers not to say these things.”

But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if my followers didn’t say these things, then the stones would cry out.”

THE APOSTLES CREED

Reader:
And so we make our declaration of faith…

All:
We believe in God the Father, Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into the grave;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit;
The Holy Worldwide Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting. Amen.

COLLECT

Reader:
(Either this or an alternative closing prayer may be said.)

God our Saviour.
Whose Son Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem,
As Messiah to suffer and to die;
Grant us the faith to know you and love you,
That we may be found beside you,
On the way of the cross,
Following Him who is alive and reigns with you,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, now and for ever. Amen

BLESSING

Reader:
(When praying in community, this or a similar blessing may be used)

And may the one God, in whom all things find their being,
Keep you in fellowship with Him and in unity with His body,
Until He returns at the end of the age. Amen
