Year II: Week 24 of Ordinary Time

Monday: Morning Prayer

ABOUT TODAY

In the church calendar the long stretch of time between Pentecost and the beginning of Advent is known as ‘Ordinary Time.’ Inasmuch as we have celebrated the birth, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus and the subsequent descent of the Holy Spirit; so this time is often seen as representative of the long ‘Church Age’ when the gospel is preached to all creation. Because of that, our intercessions during this period will include prayers for every single nation of the world by name.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Reader:
Lord, Open my lips.
All:
And my mouth will give you praise.

Reader:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
All:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

INVITATORY PSALM:

Psalm 95:1-7  (Venite, exultemus)

A Call to Worship and Obedience

All:

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;
Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.
For the Lord is the great God,
And the great King above all gods.
In His hand are the deep places of the earth;
The heights of the hills are His also.
The sea is His, for He made it;
And His hands formed the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture,
And the sheep of His hand.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

MORNING PSALM

Psalm 119:161-168

שׁ Shin

Princes persecute me without a cause,
But my heart stands in awe of Your word.
I rejoice at Your word
As one who finds great treasure.
I hate and abhor lying,
But I love Your law.
Seven times a day I praise You,
Because of Your righteous judgments.
Great peace have those who love Your law,
And nothing causes them to stumble.
Lord, I hope for Your salvation,
And I do Your commandments.
My soul keeps Your testimonies,
And I love them exceedingly.
I keep Your precepts and Your testimonies,
For all my ways are before You.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

WORSHIP

(A time of worship and thanksgiving, led or spontaneous.  Alternatively a devotional song may be played and listened to.)

PRAYER & INTERCESSION

Reader:
Let us pray for the day and its tasks, for the church and her life, and for the world and its needs.

(You may use these prayers as written or use them as ‘prayer pointers’ for your own spontaneous petitions.

Personal Requests

  • Almighty God, we thank you for the start of a new week and trust you for empowerment to serve you with courage and boldness. Give wisdom in our work life, persistence in our prayer life, diligence to fulfil our responsibilities and rest in our times of relaxation.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…
  • For power to overcome sin, the tenacity to overcome obstacles and the stubbornness to overcome evil.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…
  • For bodily health, spiritual fervour, mental clarity and material provision.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…
  • For protection from every arrow, safety from every danger, freedom from every fear and victory over every temptation.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…

 Family & Friends

  • Father of all, bless our families and those with whom we do life. May their paths be straight and their road untroubled, and may they experience a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and true happiness.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…
  • Bring those who are far from your kingdom into a saving relationship with your Son.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…
  • Bring healing to those who are sick, companionship to those who struggle alone and joy to those who mourn.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…

The Church

  • Lord Jesus, we ask for blessings upon your church, that families may be strongly defended, children powerfully protected and leaders heavily anointed! Equip the local church to reach the city and empower your people to reach the world.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…
  • For the members of our church, as they head to their places of work…
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…
  • For those that teach and those that are taught, and the work of God in schools and places of further education.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…

The World

  • God of the Nations we stand in the gap and pray for the world.  Today we pray for the Somalia, a terribly lost and unstable nation under temporary leadership of the Union of Islamic Courts. Mighty God your Word says that you bring the counsel of the nations to nothing but the counsel of the Lord stands forever, so we proclaim over this nation for your Kingdom to come and to expel the forces of darkness at work in this land.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…
  • Lord Jesus we pray for the southern part of Somalia, Puntland; overrun by civil war, violence and clan leaders craving power. We dare to believe for the peace of God to rule in this land. Would you cause people to turn away from their destructive ways and turn to the cross.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…
  • Mighty God you know the threats Christians are subject to in Somalia, threats of murder and calls for all Christians to be eliminated. Come in power we pray, overturn the works of Sharia law and establish the law of God. Increase the boldness of believers in the face of persecution and may no life be taken in vein, that the blood of the martyrs would be the seed of the Church.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…
  • We bring before your throne the 4,000 believers who worship in underground house churches. We pray you would encourage and strengthen the brethren, that they would overcome by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony.
              –  I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised…

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Reader:
And so we pray…

All:
Our Father in heaven,
Holy is Your Name.
Your Kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen.

GOSPEL READING

John 7:25-31

Can This Be the Christ?

Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from? But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”

Reader:

THE APOSTLES CREED

Reader
And so we make our declaration of faith…

All:
We believe in God the Father, Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into the grave;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit;
The Holy Worldwide Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.  Amen.

COLLECT

Reader:
(Either this or an alternative closing prayer may be said.)

Holy God, Faithful and unchanging:
Enlarge our minds with the knowledge of your truth,
And draw us more deeply into the mystery of your love,
That we may truly worship you,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
One God, now and for ever.  Amen.

BLESSING

Reader:
(When praying in community, this or a similar blessing may be used)

And may the Wisdom of God, the Love of God,
And the Grace of God strengthen you,
To be Christ’s hands and heart in this world.
In the name of the One who creates,
Redeems, and sustains all things.  Amen.
