Year II: Week 1 of Ordinary Time

Pentecost: Morning Prayer

ABOUT TODAY

Feast: Pentecost: Pentecost is a prominent feast in the Jewish calendar and celebrates the giving of the Law to Moses upon Sinai.  Christians celebrate it as the day that the Holy Spirit descended on the early church as they gathered in the upper room, and is celebrated 50 days after the feast of Easter.  It is sometimes referred to as “White Sunday” (Whitsun) because it commemorates the ‘birthday of the church’.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Reader:
Lord, Open my lips.
All:
And my mouth will give you praise.

Reader:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
All:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

INVITATORY PSALM:

Psalm 100  (Jubilate Deo)

All:

A Song of Praise for the Lord’s Faithfulness to His People
A Psalm of Thanksgiving.

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
Know that the Lord, He is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

MORNING PSALM

Psalm 68:1-18

The Glory of God in His Goodness to Israel
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. A Song.

Let God arise,
Let His enemies be scattered;
Let those also who hate Him flee before Him.
As smoke is driven away,
So drive them away;
As wax melts before the fire,
So let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
But let the righteous be glad;
Let them rejoice before God;
Yes, let them rejoice exceedingly.

Sing to God, sing praises to His name;
Extol Him who rides on the clouds,
By His name YAH,
And rejoice before Him.

A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows,
Is God in His holy habitation.
God sets the solitary in families;
He brings out those who are bound into prosperity;
But the rebellious dwell in a dry land.

O God, when You went out before Your people,
When You marched through the wilderness,   Selah
The earth shook;
The heavens also dropped rain at the presence of God;
Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
You, O God, sent a plentiful rain,
Whereby You confirmed Your inheritance,
When it was weary.
Your congregation dwelt in it;
You, O God, provided from Your goodness for the poor.

The Lord gave the word;
Great was the company of those who proclaimed it:
“Kings of armies flee, they flee,
And she who remains at home divides the spoil.
Though you lie down among the sheepfolds,
You will be like the wings of a dove covered with silver,
And her feathers with yellow gold.”
When the Almighty scattered kings in it,
It was white as snow in Zalmon.

A mountain of God is the mountain of Bashan;
A mountain of many peaks is the mountain of Bashan.
Why do you fume with envy, you mountains of many peaks?
This is the mountain which God desires to dwell in;
Yes, the Lord will dwell in it forever.

The chariots of God are twenty thousand,
Even thousands of thousands;
The Lord is among them as in Sinai, in the Holy Place.
You have ascended on high,
You have led captivity captive;
You have received gifts among men,
Even from the rebellious,
That the Lord God might dwell there.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

Personal Requests

PERSONAL REQUESTS

  • Mighty Father, who sent the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to fill your people with the life of God, pour out your Spirit afresh on me! Let your fire fall and purge away every trace of sin and every vestige of selfishness. Empower me to live the life of Christ and abandon myself to your will.
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!
  • Burn, fire of God! Come and consume the sacrifice! Let your fire fall and possess every part of my life.
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!
  • Burn, fire of God! You are pure fire and I would dwell in you! Fill me with your passion for the lost and strip from me all that is not combustible!
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!
  • Burn, fire of God! Refine my life until from its depths your face may be clearly seen. May heart, mind and will ascend to you as an acceptable offering.
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!

Family & Friends

  • Lord Jesus, forgive us when we have been ministers of the letter rather than the Spirit and the Law rather than grace. Forgive our passionless prayers, our scanty sacrifice and our luke-warm lives. Make us true witnesses of the life of God to all we know.
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!
  • Give us a passion for souls and an unrelenting love for sinners. Cause us never to give up on those for whom you died.
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!
  • Help us to redeem the time and live for this alone: to spend and to be spent for them who have not yet heard the gospel.
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!

The Church

  • Lord Jesus, pour out your Holy Spirit again on your people. Let us not live in a day of spiritual drought but in the day of your power! Speak to the dry bones and cause the wilderness to bloom. Come, Holy Spirit!
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!
  • God of Elijah, hear our cry! Make us fit to be your ambassadors and able to be your witnesses.
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!
  • Stretch forth your hand in miracles and mighty works of power. Let the young prophesy the Word of God and the old dream the dreams of God!
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!

The World

  • Lord Jesus, you promised that when the Holy Spirit came we would be equipped for service and be your witnesses in this world. Fill us with your glory and send us out with your Word. Forgive our excuses and grant that your people may be filled with holy boldness!
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!
  • We pray for a great revival amongst your people and a great awakening amongst the lost. Shake the heavens and the earth and proclaim your gospel to every nation.
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!
  • May what began at Pentecost be brought to completion in our lives. Send forth labourers into the harvest. Filled with your Spirit we say, “Here we are, Lord. Send us!”
              –  Send the fire! Send the fire! Send the fire!

THE LORD’S
 PRAYER

Reader:
And so we pray…

All:
Our Father in heaven,
Holy is Your Name.
Your Kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen.

GOSPEL READING

Acts 2:1-13

The Coming of the Holy Spirit

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

Reader:
The Word of the Lord.

THE NICENE CREED

Reader
And so we make our declaration of faith…

All:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
Of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
The only Son of God,
Eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
True God from true God,
Begotten, not created,
Of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation,
He came down from heaven:
By the power of the Holy Spirit,
He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
And was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again,
In accordance with the Scriptures;
He ascended into heaven,
And is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
And his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
Who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
And the life of the world to come.  Amen.

COLLECT

Reader:
(Either this or an alternative closing prayer may be said.)

Almighty God, who on this day,
Opened the way of eternal life,
To every race and nation,
by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit:
Shed abroad this gift throughout the world
By the sending of your people,
And by the preaching of the Gospel,
That it may reach to the ends of the earth;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Who lives and reigns with you,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever. Amen.

BLESSING

Reader:
(When praying in community, this or a similar blessing may be used)

And may the life of the Holy Spirit renew your soul,
The power of the Holy Spirit equip you for service,
And the fire of the Holy Spirit consume the sacrifice. Amen.
