Year II: Holy Week

Tuesday of Holy Week: Morning Prayer

ABOUT TODAY

Tuesday of Holy Week:  This week is what is commonly referred to as Holy Week; the final week of Lent leading up to Easter Sunday.  During this time we focus on the last few days of Jesus’ earthly ministry and the events leading up to and including his death.  This morning we focus on the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus in John 17 that he prayed shortly before his death, while our afternoon readings continue to tell the story of the liberation of the Children of Israel in their Exodus from Egypt.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Reader:
Lord, Open my lips.
All:
And my mouth will give you praise.

Reader:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
All:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

INVITATORY PSALM:

Psalm 67  (Deus misereatur)

All:

An Invocation and a Doxology
To the Chief Musician. On stringed instruments. A Psalm. A Song.

God be merciful to us and bless us,
And cause His face to shine upon us,
That Your way may be known on earth,
Your salvation among all nations.

Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.
Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy!
For You shall judge the people righteously,
And govern the nations on earth.  Selah

Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.
Then the earth shall yield her increase;
God, our own God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us,
And all the ends of the earth shall fear Him.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

MORNING PSALM

Psalm 42

Yearning for God in the Midst of Distresses
To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the sons of Korah.

As the deer pants for the water brooks,
So pants my soul for You, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
My tears have been my food day and night,
While they continually say to me,
“Where is your God?”

When I remember these things,
I pour out my soul within me.
For I used to go with the multitude;
I went with them to the house of God,
With the voice of joy and praise,
With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.

Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him
For the help of His countenance.

O my God, my soul is cast down within me;
Therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan,
And from the heights of Hermon,
From the Hill Mizar.
Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls;
All Your waves and billows have gone over me.
The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime,
And in the night His song shall be with me—
A prayer to the God of my life.

I will say to God my Rock,
“Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”
As with a breaking of my bones,
My enemies reproach me,
While they say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”

Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
For I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

PRAYER & INTERCESSION

Reader:
Let us pray for the day and its tasks, for the church and her life, and for the world and its needs.

(You may use these prayers as written or use them as ‘prayer pointers’ for your own spontaneous petitions.

Personal Requests

  • Almighty God, you prayed for us that we may be one with you and one with each other. Unite us by your Spirit to yourself and let us realize the unity we share with you and the grace that called us into the body of Christ. Let us apprehend the Kingdom of God within.
              –  Father, make us one…
  • Forgive us when we have tried to divide our love and attention between you and the idols of our desires.
              –  Father, make us one…
  • Reunite the scattered fragments of our heart and unify our souls in you. May the Kingdom be fixed within.
             –  Father, make us one..

Family & Friends

  • Lord Jesus, keep those I love and suffer them not to fail or fall. Protect them by your name and defend them by your almighty power. Let not the enemy prevail or the accuser sow doubt, nor let the subtlety of sin ensnare them.
              –  Father, make us one…
  • For those going through their own dark night of the soul. May they be strengthened by hope and delivered from all their fears.
              –  Father, make us one…
  • For those who linger at the edges of faith and struggle at the fringes of community that they may be brought into your fold.
              –  Father, make us one…

The Church

  • Lord Jesus, be glorified in your people. Sanctify them by your truth – your word is truth. May they be one even as you are one with the Father; and may the perfections of the unity of the Godhead be mirrored in the unity of your people on earth.
              –  Father, make us one…
  • Forgive us our sectarian divisions and denominational pride. Cleanse from us all sense of superiority and doctrinal conceit.
              –  Father, make us one…
  • Demolish the walls that separate us, that the world might believe. Break down our stubborn will that your glory may rest upon us.
              –  Father, make us one…

The World

  • Lord Jesus, you prayed not only for your disciples but also for those who would believe through their word. Bring us into the maturity of faith and the fullness of the Spirit so that the world may come to the saving knowledge of Christ.
              –  Father, make us one…
  • Reveal your Son to us then reveal your Son in us to the world. May the love you have for us be mirrored in our love for them.
              –  Father, make us one…
  • Glorify your Son that your Son may also glorify you. Lift high the Cross and draw all men to the brightness of his coming!
              –  Father, make us one…

THE LORD’S
 PRAYER

Reader:
And so we pray…

All:
Our Father in heaven,
Holy is Your Name.
Your Kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen.

GOSPEL READING

John 17:1-26

The High Priestly Prayer

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.

“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Lesson from the Church Fathers – ‘Awakening Faith’ Day 95

THE APOSTLES CREED

Reader
And so we make our declaration of faith…

All:
We believe in God the Father, Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into the grave;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit;
The Holy Worldwide Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.  Amen.

COLLECT

Reader:
(Either this or an alternative closing prayer may be said.)

O Lord, who has mercy upon all,
Take away from us our sins,
And mercifully kindle in us,
The fire of thy Holy Spirit.
Take away from us the heart of stone,
And give us a heart of flesh,
A heart to love and adore you,
A heart to delight in you,
To follow and enjoy you,
For Christ’s sake,  Amen

(St. Ambrose of Milan – AD339-397)

BLESSING

Reader:
(When praying in community, this or a similar blessing may be used)

And may the love of God lead you to the heart of Christ,
The peace of God lead you to the Prince of Peace,
And the power of God lead you to true life.  Amen
