Year II: Week 3 of Lent

Friday: Morning Prayer

ABOUT TODAY

We are currently in the season of Lent, which is the traditional 40 days of prayer, fasting, reflection and repentance that precedes the great Easter celebrations.   Just as Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness learning to overcome the Enemy, so we set this time aside for spiritual warfare and renewal.  It is common during this time to imitate the simplicity of Jesus in the wilderness by abstaining from rich foods and strong drink during this season, and to devote extra time to the practice of the spiritual disciplines.  The daily intercessions throughout the entire Lenten season reflect this focus, and drill deeply into our selfish attitudes and sinful actions.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Reader:
Lord, Open my lips.
All:
And my mouth will give you praise.

Reader:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
All:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

INVITATORY PSALM:

Psalm 67 (Doxology)

All:

An Invocation and a Doxology
To the Chief Musician. On stringed instruments. A Psalm. A Song.

God be merciful to us and bless us,
And cause His face to shine upon us,
That Your way may be known on earth,
Your salvation among all nations.

Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.
Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy!
For You shall judge the people righteously,
And govern the nations on earth.   Selah

Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.
Then the earth shall yield her increase;
God, our own God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us,
And all the ends of the earth shall fear Him.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

MORNING PSALM

Psalm 43

Prayer to God in Time of Trouble

Vindicate me, O God,
And plead my cause against an ungodly nation;
Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!
For You are the God of my strength;
Why do You cast me off?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

Oh, send out Your light and Your truth!
Let them lead me;
Let them bring me to Your holy hill
And to Your tabernacle.
Then I will go to the altar of God,
To God my exceeding joy;
And on the harp I will praise You,
O God, my God.

Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
For I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

WORSHIP

All:
(A time of worship and thanksgiving, led or spontaneous.  Alternatively a devotional song may be played and listened to.)

PRAYER & INTERCESSION

Reader:
Let us pray for the day and its tasks, for the church and her life, and for the world and its needs.

(You may use these prayers as written or use them as ‘prayer pointers’ for your own spontaneous petitions.

Personal Requests

  • We confess that we are attracted to false gods and easy answers in life.  Forgive us when sin draws us like moths to a flame.  Restore us and fill us with godly resolve.  Strengthen us in our walk and empower us for the journey.
             –  Lord, have mercy…
  • When we have lived in this world without reference to you and without consultation of your will.
              –  Lord, have mercy…
  • When we have lived by our own strength and not by the power of your resurrection.
              –  Lord, have mercy…
  • When we have lived by the light of our eyes and not by the true vision of faith.
              –  Lord, have mercy…

Family & Friends

  • Lord Jesus, you have called us into your family and provided for us as your children.  Forgive us when we have stood by while others have laboured, granted ourselves leisure while others have served and taken ease while others have provided.
              –  Lord, have mercy…
  • For the widow un-provided for, the parent uncared for, the prodigal un-watched for.
              –  Lord, have mercy…
  • For the lost and the lonely, who often find our backs when they seek our face.
             –  Lord, have mercy…
  • For the fatherless son, for the motherless daughter, for the friendless soul.
            –  Lord, have mercy…

The Church

  • Lord Jesus, we your church have failed you in our inconsistent witness to the world, the poverty of our love and the divisions within our ranks.  Forgive us when we have placed our comfort before your honour, our agenda before your plans and our lives before your call.
              –  Lord, have mercy…
  • For abuses of power, pride of position and self-righteous attitudes.
              –  Lord, have mercy…
  • For ruling when we should serve, grasping when we should give and lecturing when we should love.
              –  Lord, have mercy…

The World

  • Ever-living God, how often have we avoided your call, circumvented your commandments and excused our absence.  May we go to the world in your name, speak to the world with your word and bring love to the world with your compassion.
              –  Lord, have mercy…
  •  Lord Jesus, you wept over the sins of your city.
              –    Lord, have mercy…
  • Lord Jesus you healed the wounds of sin and division.
              –  Lord, have mercy…
  • Lord Jesus, you made known your salvation to the nations.
              –  Lord, have mercy…

THE LORD’S
 PRAYER

Reader:
And so we pray…

All:
Our Father in heaven,
Holy is Your Name.
Your Kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen.

GOSPEL READING

John 7:37-39

Rivers of Living Water

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Reader:
The Word of the Lord.
All:
Thanks be to God.

THE APOSTLES CREED

Reader
And so we make our declaration of faith…

All:
We believe in God the Father, Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into the grave;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit;
The Holy Worldwide Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.  Amen.

COLLECT

Reader:
(Either this or an alternative closing prayer may be said.)

Father in Heaven,
the light of your truth bestows sight,
To the darkness of sinful eyes.
}May this season of repentance
Bring us the blessing of Your forgiveness
And the gift of Your light.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

BLESSING

Reader:
(When praying in community, this or a similar blessing may be used)

And may Lent be for you the end of sin,
The cessation of fear and the beginning of hope,
In the Kingdom of His Son.  Amen
