Year I: Week 28 of Ordinary Time

Sunday: Morning Prayer

ABOUT TODAY

In the church calendar the long stretch of time between Pentecost and the beginning of Advent is known as ‘Ordinary Time.’ Inasmuch as we have celebrated the birth, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus and the subsequent descent of the Holy Spirit; so this time is often seen as representative of the long ‘Church Age’ when the gospel is preached to all creation. Because of that, our intercessions during this period will include prayers for every single nation of the world by name.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Reader:
Lord, Open my lips.
All:
And my mouth will give you praise.

Reader:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
All:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

INVITATORY PSALM:

Psalm 100  (Jubilate Deo)

All:

A Song of Praise for the Lord’s Faithfulness to His People
A Psalm of Thanksgiving.

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
Know that the Lord, He is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

MORNING PSALM

Psalm 18:1-39

God the Sovereign Savior
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord, who spoke to the Lordthe words of this song on the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said:

I will love You, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies.

The pangs of death surrounded me,
And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called upon the Lord,
And cried out to my God;
He heard my voice from His temple,
And my cry came before Him, even to His ears.

Then the earth shook and trembled;
The foundations of the hills also quaked and were shaken,
Because He was angry.
Smoke went up from His nostrils,
And devouring fire from His mouth;
Coals were kindled by it.
He bowed the heavens also, and came down
With darkness under His feet.
And He rode upon a cherub, and flew;
He flew upon the wings of the wind.
He made darkness His secret place;
His canopy around Him was dark waters
And thick clouds of the skies.
From the brightness before Him,
His thick clouds passed with hailstones and coals of fire.

The Lord thundered from heaven,
And the Most High uttered His voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
He sent out His arrows and scattered the foe,
Lightnings in abundance, and He vanquished them.
Then the channels of the sea were seen,
The foundations of the world were uncovered
At Your rebuke, O Lord,
At the blast of the breath of Your nostrils.

He sent from above, He took me;
He drew me out of many waters.
He delivered me from my strong enemy,
From those who hated me,
For they were too strong for me.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
But the Lord was my support.
He also brought me out into a broad place;
He delivered me because He delighted in me.

The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness;
According to the cleanness of my hands
He has recompensed me.
For I have kept the ways of the Lord,
And have not wickedly departed from my God.
For all His judgments were before me,
And I did not put away His statutes from me.
I was also blameless before Him,
And I kept myself from my iniquity.
Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness,
According to the cleanness of my hands in His sight.

With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful;
With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless;
With the pure You will show Yourself pure;
And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd.
For You will save the humble people,
But will bring down haughty looks.

For You will light my lamp;
The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.
For by You I can run against a troop,
By my God I can leap over a wall.
As for God, His way is perfect;
The word of the Lord is proven;
He is a shield to all who trust in Him.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

WORSHIP

All:
(A time of worship and thanksgiving, led or spontaneous.  Alternatively a devotional song may be played and listened to.)

PRAYER & INTERCESSION

Reader:
Let us pray for the day and its tasks, for the church and her life, and for the world and its needs.

(You may use these prayers as written or use them as ‘prayer pointers’ for your own spontaneous petitions.

Personal Requests

  • Almighty God, we set aside this day to gather in your presence and worship you. Build your church and let not the gates of hell prevail against her. Bring numerical increase and spiritual depth; that multitudes from the North, South, East and West may hear your call and enter your gates with joy!
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…
  • For hearts ready to receive your Word and hands ready to reach out in love.
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…
  • For feet ready to do your will and mouths ready to sing out in praise.
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…

Family & Friends

  • Father of all, bring peace and wholeness to our families today. Heal that which is sick, restore that which is broken, strengthen that which is weak and comfort that which knows pain.
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…
  • Make us bold in our witness, incessant in our prayers and relentless in our love.
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…
  • Give us eyes to see the lonely and grace to welcome them into our homes.
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…

The Church

  • Lord Jesus, we pray for our church. May her leaders hear your voice with great clarity, her ministries fulfil your will with great compassion and her people follow your path with great fervour. May we live the message we profess.
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…
  • For those who labour in practical ministry. May they be strengthened in their service and encouraged in their calling.
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…
  • For those who bring your Word to children and to adults. May their words bring life to the dead and encouragement to the weak.
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…
  • For those who would hear your call today. Convict, convince, convert and consume!
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…

The World

  • Mighty God, the whole world is in your hands and you have compassion on all peoples.  We ask today for Venezuela, socially fractured by the ever increasing gap between rich and poor with the top fifth of the country controlling the majority of all wealth. We pray to Jehovah Jireh and ask for your provision for those living in extreme poverty, give them today their daily bread and bless them with peace of mind for tomorrow.
               –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…
  • The gap between wealth and poverty extends to that of religion, with the rich dominating religious hierarchy of Catholicism and the poor being left on the fringes. Father we thank you that you came to seek and to save those who were lost, so we pray for those feeling misplaced that they would find their home in you.
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…
  • We pray for new believers who have been rescued from backgrounds of drugs, crime, abuse and spiritualism, may full salvation take hold of their hearts and a full transformation of the mind.
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting….
  • Lord Jesus we pray for your Church in this nation, make her a beacon to those who are lost, a sanctuary to those who are damaged and a well to those who are thirsty.
              –  For the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting…

THE LORD’S
 PRAYER

Reader:
And so we pray…

All:
Our Father in heaven,
Holy is Your Name.
Your Kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen.

GOSPEL READING

John 10:1-21

I Am the Good Shepherd

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. Many of them said, “He has a demon, and is insane; why listen to him?” Others said, “These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

THE APOSTLES CREED

Reader
And so we make our declaration of faith…

All:
We believe in God the Father, Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into the grave;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit;
The Holy Worldwide Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.  Amen.

COLLECT

(Either this or an alternative closing prayer may be said.)

And give you peace. Amen.
