Year I: Week 24 of Ordinary Time

Saturday: Morning Prayer

ABOUT TODAY

 In the church calendar the long stretch of time between Pentecost and the beginning of Advent is known as ‘Ordinary Time.’ Inasmuch as we have celebrated the birth, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus and the subsequent descent of the Holy Spirit; so this time is often seen as representative of the long ‘Church Age’ when the gospel is preached to all creation. Because of that, our intercessions during this period will include prayers for every single nation of the world by name.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Reader:
Lord, Open my lips.
All:
And my mouth will give you praise.

Reader:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
All:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

INVITATORY PSALM:

Psalm 34:1-10  (Benedicam Domino)

All:

The Happiness of Those Who Trust in God
A Psalm of David when he pretended madness before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed.

I will bless the Lord at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul shall make its boast in the Lord;
The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
And let us exalt His name together.

I sought the Lord, and He heard me,
And delivered me from all my fears.
They looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces were not ashamed.
This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him,
And delivers them.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints!
There is no want to those who fear Him.
The young lions lack and suffer hunger;
But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

MORNING PSALM

Psalm 130

Waiting for the Redemption of the Lord
A Song of Ascents.

Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord;
Lord, hear my voice!
Let Your ears be attentive
To the voice of my supplications.

If You, Lord, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with You,
That You may be feared.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
And in His word I do hope.
My soul waits for the Lord
More than those who watch for the morning—
Yes, more than those who watch for the morning.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is mercy,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

All:
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen

WORSHIP

All:
(A time of worship and thanksgiving, led or spontaneous.  Alternatively a devotional song may be played and listened to.)

PRAYER & INTERCESSION

Reader:
Let us pray for the day and its tasks, for the church and her life, and for the world and its needs.

(You may use these prayers as written or use them as ‘prayer pointers’ for your own spontaneous petitions.

Personal Requests

  • Mighty Lord, you call us to labour and you call us to rest. May this weekend bring openings for service, opportunities for stillness, times for others and occasions for rest.
              –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!
  • Prepare our hearts to receive your Word, our mouths to proclaim your gospel and our hands to serve our Lord.
              –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!
  • For hands quick to obey, for minds clean and holy, for speech kind and truthful and for motives pure and godly.
              –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!

 Family & Friends

  • Lord Jesus, you befriended the sinner and elevated the lowly; you lifted the weak and healed the broken. Keep me from mindlessly following the crowd when my Lord has stooped to minister to those on the fringes. May I find my mission in the margins.
               –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!
  • For attentiveness to the call of your Spirit, consideration to the needs of others and mindfulness to the cry of the lost.
               –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!
  • Bring wholeness to my family today. May they be blessed in the city and blessed in the field, blessed coming in and blessed going out.
              –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!
  • Bring salvation to my friends today. May their extremity be your opportunity and their deepest needs be met in the deepest love of Calvary.
              –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!

The Church

  • Lord Jesus, we intercede for your people, joining the prayers of the Church Militant on earth with the prayers of the Church Triumphant in glory. Bring all to completion and return for a bride all spotless and pure!
              –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!
  • For those who lead in worship and those who minister in prayer and counsel. May they know genuine unction and constant refreshing.
              –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!
  • For our Pastors, Leaders and those in authority. May they have courage to speak boldly, strength to lead bravely and compassion to love tenderly.
              –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!
  • For Followers who sit at a distance – open their hearts to the fullness of Christ. For Disciples who walk in your footsteps – may they be kept by the power of God. For Pilgrims who stand before your throne – may they inspire by the testimony of their lives.
               –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!

The World

  • Today we pray for Sri Lanka, known as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’. Lord Jesus, you know every challenge and every issue faced by a people struggling to overcome economic inequality and ethnic prejudice caused by a generation of civil war. Bring healing to the broken, peace to the anxious and supernatural solutions to social breakdowns.
              –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!
  • Mighty God we lift up a nation suffering from an increase of alcoholism, suicide, violence and rape. We pray you would break the power of sin that causes destruction to so many lives. Raise up a standard Lord Jesus which will see the enemy defeated!
             –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!
  • Persecution and violence against those who believe in you is not an uncommon occurrence here.  We pray that believers would be steadfast in their beliefs, fighting the good fight of faith and recognising the urgency to see others saved.
              –  Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His love endures forever!

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Reader:
And so we pray…

All:
Our Father in heaven,
Holy is Your Name.
Your Kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen.

GOSPEL READING

John 4:27-45

Just then his disciples came back. They marvelled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,“Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” They went out of the town and were coming to him.

Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you did not labour. Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labour.”

Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.”

After the two days he departed for Galilee. (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honour in his own home town.) So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For they too had gone to the feast.

Reader:
The Word of the Lord.
All:
Thanks be to God.

THE APOSTLES CREED

Reader
And so we make our declaration of faith…

All:
We believe in God the Father, Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into the grave;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit;
The Holy Worldwide Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.  Amen.

COLLECT

Reader:
(Either this or an alternative closing prayer may be said.)

God, who in generous mercy sent the Holy Spirit,
Upon your Church in the burning fire of your love:
Grant that your people may be fervent,
In the fellowship of your gospel,
That, always abiding in you,
They may be found steadfast in faith and active in service;
Through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord,
Who is alive and reigns with you.  Amen

BLESSING

Reader:
(When praying in community, this or a similar blessing may be used)

And may the beauty of God be reflected in your eyes,
The love of God be embodied in your hands,
The wisdom of God be present in your words
And the knowledge of God be implanted in your heart,
That all might see, and seeing, may believe.  Amen.
